Alba International White Truffle Fair
An internationally-acclaimed event not to be missed, the Alba Truffle Fair celebrates the regions most prized gastronomic delight. A roster of events in Alba, the Langhe and Roero from SATURDAY 6 OCTOBER TO SUNDAY 18 NOVEMBER
THE IMAGE OF THE 82nd INTERNATIONAL ALBA WHITE TRUFFLE FAIR
Cream of potato with lapsang souchong tea-flavoured quail eggs and White Truffle of Alba. A dish by Enrico Crippa, the two Michelin-star chef of the Piazza Duomo restaurant in Alba.
Traditional local ingredients, such as potato and eggs, with the international flavor of smoked Chinese tea: a warm sensation, with the aroma of an open fire in a country cottage and of woodland... and steam turning into a film to conjure up the theme of Cinema&TrufFLES.
FROM SATURDAY 6 OCTOBER TO SUNDAY 18 NOVEMBER ~ Palazzo Mostre e Congressi
The association between cinema and the White Truffle of Alba began in 1949 when the Fairs creator, Giacomo Morra, sent a fine specimen to the American actress Rita Hayworth. A few years later he sent another large truffle to Marilyn Monroe, while the master of suspense Alfred Hitchcock came to Alba in person to receive his. Then it was the turn of Alberto Sordi, Ugo Tognazzi, Nino Manfredi, Ornella Muti, Gèrard Depardieu, Sofia Loren, Alain Delon, Francis Ford Coppola, Penelope Cruz.
The CINEMA&TARTUFO exhibition presents the many mentions the truffle has enjoyed in the movies, where it has been seen as a status symbol or an aphrodisiac, a star in the kitchen or inextricably linked with the plots of film noir. The references range from directors like Marco Ferreri, Luciano Salce, Danièle Thompson and Scott Hicks, to actors such as Marcello Mastroianni, Renato Pozzetto, Carlo Verdone, Catherine Zeta Jones and Julia Roberts. Anecdotes and strange and curious facts are also remembered through images and objects. The emotion of an experience, travelling through time amidst the greats of world cinema.

SENSORY ANALYSIS OF THE TRUFFLE
A heady, intense aroma, a unique and extraordinarily rich scent, as well as a great allure and an aura of mystery. This is the Tuber magnatum Pico, better known as the White Truffle of Alba, the most highly-prized of fungi.
Scientifically-speaking the truffle is an underground mushroom, but for the nose of the gourmet it is aboveall a peerless aroma. How do you go about choosing a truffle though? Whats the best way to appreciate them? How should they be kept? And how should you eat them? An expert in Sensory Analysis from OIAT (the International Truffle Tasters Association) will reveal all the secrets through not-to-be-missed sensory and smell tests. The truffle tasters course will provide basic information on mycology and the tools required for a correct approach to a considered tasting of the truffle.

SUNDAY 7 OCTOBER ~ Piazza O.Cagnasso 16h30
On the first Sunday in October the nine districts of Alba compete in a donkey race for a painted silk cloth, the Palio. The Palio race is preceded by a grand procession through the streets of the town with a cast of more than a thousand, including noblewomen, knights, soldiers, commoners and peasants, amidst blasting trumpets, rolling drums, standards and flags.
When they enter the arena in piazza Osvaldo Cagnasso, each district acts out a historic episode relating to the Middle Ages: battles, sieges, acts of banditry, marriages, religious festivals, alliances. The race itself is made up of two heats and a final, while the draw for the donkeys takes place in piazza Risorgimento on the Sunday of the Palio.
Allocation of the donkeys to the towns districts:

Visitors are welcomed by torchlight to sample the flavours and aromas of days gone by, with music, roaming characters, and a cast of a thousand in period costume animating Alba, taking us back in time.
The following day - Sunday 21st - the Mediaeval Fair brings the Middle Ages back to life: customs, songs, cries, costumes, good food and wine. There will be the chance to taste the wines and dishes of the Langhe and Roero in modern and mediaeval versions, as well as to have fun, dance, and party with the representatives of the various districts of the town.
